The SPOTY award is a very important trophy in the football world and it is a very big deal for any player. That is why it is always a very exciting time when the winning team is able to celebrate the award with their teammates. During the World Cup, this was the case for Arsenal’s Joey Mead, who was honored with the SPOTY Award for his outstanding performances throughout the tournament.
English international footballer
There’s no doubt that Beth Mead has had an exceptional year. After all, she won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, and she helped England reach the semi-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
However, Mead’s award comes just as her mother, Rebecca, is fighting cancer. As well as her award winning performance on the pitch, she also launched a scholarship at Teesside University to help students with dual careers in women’s football.
In the lead up to her SPOTY win, Mead had a tough year off the pitch. She was left out of the Great Britain Olympic squad in Tokyo last year, and she was also named to the England squad for the home European Championship.
It’s not often that women’s football gets much attention from the mainstream press. And that’s even more true when the awards are handed out by an institution that has never publicly recognized domestic female football.
The goal tally
Mead’s Arsenal team-mates have been enjoying the news of her win. They posted a video on Twitter showing them reacting to the announcement. The award was the first for a female player.
It was the first time a women’s footballer has won a BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. Beth Mead beat fellow striker Sam Kerr and Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas to win the prize.
During the award ceremony, the BBC awarded its trophy to Mead. The prize was presented by Clare Balding.
Mead, a five-foot four-inch striker, was named the tournament’s Player of the Tournament. She also took home the Golden Boot, the award for the most goals scored by a female player at a major European tournament.
At the Euros, Mead scored four times. She also made nine assists. In the nine-goal victory over Zurich FC, she hit a hat-trick.
Assists
Mead is a soccer player for Arsenal and England. She has scored 61 goals in 166 appearances for the club.
Beth Mead was awarded the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament for her performance at the Euro 2022. The English forward was the top scorer of the tournament with six goals and five assists. Her award also made her the first female footballer to receive the prize.
In addition to being a winner of the trophy, Mead was also named as the best Women’s Soccer Player of the Year. For her achievement, she was the recipient of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022, the first woman to achieve this accolade.
The ceremony was held in Media City in Salford, near Old Trafford. A video of the event was posted on the club’s Twitter account. It shows live reaction from Mead’s teammates.

World Cup
Beth Mead has become the first woman to win a Sports Personality of the Year award. She was awarded the prize for her achievements at Euro 2022, where she led the England Lionesses to their first European Championship win. The 22-year-old scored six goals and won the Golden Boot.
It’s not just the award that’s impressive, though. In fact, the Football Association has made a significant increase in the number of female players in its squads. From September 2022 to December 2022, the FFA has boosted the percentage of women in its 62 national teams by 12.5%.
While the Football Association’s announcement doesn’t necessarily mean Mead will win the SPOTY, she will certainly be a contender for it. A recent poll by the BBC, involving a public vote, named her the best female sports person of the year.
SPOTY book review
Beth Mead made history as she became the first woman to win a Sports Personality of the Year award. But she has had a tough year. Her mother has battled with cancer, and she suffered an injury playing for Arsenal. It has left her without a place in the Great Britain squad at the Olympics in Tokyo and at next year’s World Cup in Australia.
Earlier this month, she ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Arsenal. She was left out of the GB squad for the Olympics and is still trying to recover. That meant she will miss the 2022 World Cup in Australia.
The 27-year-old striker was named Player of the Tournament at the Women’s Euros and has also been named Golden Boot winner. Beth scored six goals in six matches at the tournament.
